48 hours of Madness- How 2880 Films did under pressure

It started with a question, "You want to be in the 48 hour film festival ?" I was asked by my old editing friend and David Lynch like filmmaker, Steven Escolar. Without even thing about it I blurred out "Fuck yeah, I do." This was Stevens first 48 hour film fest. I had some pervious experience from my film school days at Full Sail. I kinda knew what we were up against in this competition. 48 hours to come up with a script, get actors, get locations, shoot the movie, cut it, and deliver your master piece (or piece of shit) before the clock runs out. In other words " FILM FUCKING MADNESS"
Steven submitted the cash to enter in the festival. There was no turning back. Steven would Directed, while I would do the Cinematography. We later decided to get the most out of it and both shoot, since he owned the Canon T3i and I had the T2i.
I then pulled a favor and asked my friend Alex Alvarez to work sound for us. He had gear for sound, which included a boom mic, mixer and H4n Zoom recorder. The three us were basically the crew. Steven's mind was going a mile a minute once he got the paper work from offices of the festival. They gave us a genre, line to say, and a prop that we had to use. I got the text from Steven saying "We got period piece for the movie...Fuuuk". Fuck indeed I thought. We later spoke over the phone and told me that our prop was a ketchup packet. Our one line that had to be in the movie was "Say it like you mean it" What a line.
While talking over the phone, Steve's mouth was spilling a river of ideas that came at me like waves. Some of his ideas were good ( even cool) but not practical. We had a short amount of time to produce this movie. I told Steven to keep things simple, keep the amount of actors small and keep the location to one or two. Most of all I told him to not complicate the story(laugh).
Steve got started on coming up with ideas. I dont think he slept at all that night. On top of everything, Steven had a 9am call time to shoot some models for a promotional AD. Alex and I woke up early as well to scout locations on a separate project.
Later, we geared up met up around 6. The rondevu point was at the Metro rail out in Hialeah. Steve was there with Anthony Paez, both looking like they came off the Reservoir Dogs set. I was armed with my T2i with a pistol grip handel and View finder.Couple of extra actor arrived to who where friends of Steven and were willing to help out. Our main actor and actress. Amber Blepp was a co work at the at mine and Steven's day job. She and her boyfriend,Matt Ruffini, played the leads. Steve had a rough story written out but no lines. He worked with actors to come up with some sorta dialogue and explained his rough idea. While in the parking lot, I noticed the Metro rail security was already giving us dirty looks as we were working on a plan.

We had no permit to shoot at the location so we kinda needed to be sneaky with filming. We did how ever get caught a couple of time by security, who had nothing better to do but to hassle filmmakers. Our excuses were that we where shooting promo photos for a band. They sorta bought it. Me and Steve were stealing shots left and right. I was mostly shooting extra coverage and B-roll while Steve focused on directing while shooting the main parts of his story.
Steven story was simple yet complex. It was mostly about a guy who was wanting to talk to a girl he saw at a train station. What made it complex and even weird was this "Pig man" character, which I still don't know what his roll in the movie was or what he symbolized. To Steve it all made sense.
Once we finally got pass the train fair (which was a pain in the ass btw) we filmed some moments at the station. It was tough to film inside the train. We had to deal with pedestrians that were coming on and off the train while going over the scenes. Continuity? What continuity? We had no script supervisor (barely a script too). We sorta just winged it and tried to keep everyone besides our actors out of focus or out of frame. The train was shaky and would frequently stop with out warning once it reach a station. I almost fell on my ass plenty of times during shooing and almost mashed my lens.
During one scene in the movie, Matt Ruffini (main actor) used the ketchup packet and squirted it on his wrist. Matt's character does this so he can attract the attention Amber's character into talking to him.Because we all know the best way to impress a girl is to appear suicidal. We took only one take of Matt applying the ketchup to his wrist but in two different angles. Since we didn't think out getting any napkins to wipe the ketchup off, Steve took the sleeve of his black jacket and wiped it off. He had a glob of ketchup on him while shooting. Once we made it to our next stop, Steve stepped out to wiped the glob off on some rail at the station. The doors closed on him moments after. I managed to prie open the door so Steven could slip back in. "We almost lost you there, dude" I said to him.

We kept on shooting till 1am. Our last shot was a car mount shot. Steven had the gear for the set up and we used my camera with a Fish eye lens I had in my bag.The shots came out pretty cool. After a couple of takes driving around the block, we called it a wrap. Steven looked beat but wasn't going home to rest. Instead, Steve went to the office and started processing the footage to pro res. The next day, I met up with him at the office at 12pm. He had stayed up all night and started working on a rough cut on the picture. I sat right next to him at my desk and started making special effects he need for the look. he wanted to make the movie look like it was old VHS tapes. I also got to work on an logo intro for our group, 2880 Films (see blow).

We spent most of the rest of the day rushing thru the final edit. We also shot some more weird "Pig man" shots to splice in to the movie. At the end the rendering is what really killed us. The effect and look we wanted for the film had to be cut out completely. Steve rushed out of the office to deliver the movie to 48 hour film group. We made it in the festival but we weren't satisfied with the final results. If we only had more time to cut. Either way Im glad that we did the movie and had fun doing it. Screening for the movie "Rough Cut" will be August 5th.

Interview with rapper "Lowercase"

Here is something I quickly put together for a local rap artist, Lowercase. It was shot with the Canon T2i/550D down in the Everglades near the Miccosukee tribe. I was with Alex Alvarez, sound man and future director, and Lowercase. The lens I used was the 28mm. You'll notice that at some points of the movie that there tends to be a flicker of darkness between shots. The reason for that is I kept hitting the aperture ring while manually focusing. You'll also notice that the camera a bit shaky. I shot this hand held with out a rig to steady the shot. This interview was totally shot on the fly, wasn't really prepared to do an interview because we ( Alex, Lowercase and me) were scouting location for the music video for Lowercase's song "Rebel Fleet". Sound was straight from the camera , no separated audio device was used.
As for the editing I used Final Cut 7. I usually use Apple Color for my color correction but since this was something on the fly I decided to use Light Kit 1.0 from Noise Industries. I tweaked the colors and effects abit to give the look that you see in the video. The text was done on FCP.
To be honest the interview and final result doesn't live up to my standards because I rushed it. Oh well... You film, cut and you learn.

Do you want your video on Craigslist? I know how

Craigslist(CL), no matter what your feeling are about it, is great website to sell and promote services. Over the years I've gotten a lot of freelance work thru advertisements in CL. The only thing thats a draw back from the site is that it doesn't allow video from Youtube to be embedded. Its something to do with the HTML codes or something but there are ways around it. I found way to put a still image and link it with the YouTube site. Here a video that breaks it down, thanks to Super Geeks:

After watching this I looked around and found how to do it. Its really simple and I going to use this method to promote the hell out VPG.

Logo Animations: Apple Motion +After Effects CS5

Since I've gotten After Effects, been trying out different tourtrials and mixing them with Apple motion. Moving to After Effects from Motion has been a bit of a challenge but some things stay relatively the same. Apple Motion seem way easier and less intimidating then After Effects but thats because AF has more options to play with. What I want to focus creating more text and 3d intros.Like I said I've been combining Motion and After Effects to try to figure out what works best. Here are some examples.

Whats New? Here an update and video.

Its like I can never find the time to blog about these things. So much to to tell, I'll try to keep things short and sweet. In the passed few months my DSLR rig has grown and turn in to a filmmaking beast. The rig now comes with shoulder mount, a new 17-85mm lens and 7'' inch HD screen. Its a bit getting use to but I was expecting that. I've done some test around Wynwood/ Art District and have recently shot some BTS (Behind the scene) of photographer Joseph Evans. The following video is a sample of the BTS I shot one early morning with Mr. Evans and a Model( who's name escapes me at this moment.)

I color correct the video using Lucas Visual FX's Lighting Kit and a bit of Apple Color. The full video will be out soon.
More videos coming soon.

So what if Im sick? I can still cut...New T2i video

I've worked a lot these past few weeks. Theres been so many DSLR production happing in South Florida, I am thinking Florida has become "The Independent Film State". Small DSLR budget films, like "Chlorophyll" directed by Barry Jenkins and an 80s Horror Slasher music video by director Lucas Leyva, has inspired me to go out and shoot. I went with my friends, Alex and his cousin Eli, around Miami. We did some film test.I used two lenes, a 28mm and FD 50mm. Tried out the new DSLR rig as well. I tried make a music video out of it, I used the music by Dj SpyRock.

No lights, small crew, two DSLRs , and me on sound: (AKA) a weekend short film"Chlorophyll"

This pass weekend I helped my friend and colleague, Alex Alvarez, on a short film. Alex, who is a sound man for as long as i've know him, had recruited me from time to time as his boom operator( the dude with mic on the end of a stick) and wanted me to join along on this project. The short film, called "Chlorophyll" and it was a four day shoot. I had other gigs lined up so I could help out for two days. The first day of shooting was shot at night. Alex didn't need me for the evening, he just told me me to pick him up after the shoot. I met him later on around midnight at a studio near the Design District in downtown Miami. There I was introduced to Andrew Hevia, the producer of the short.Andrew, who was also Minister of Agriculture at Borscht Film Festival, had a interesting resume of short movie on his website. I immediately complemented him of his 16mm short "Spinning Off!" , which I really liked. I got a bit of the low down on what was going on tomorrow from Alex and Adrew.
The next day I met the director Barry Jenkins and Cinematographer David Bornfriend. They both came from San francisco but Barry was originally from Miami I later learned. He made a name for him self as a filmmaker and has directed 6 films.David Bornfriend was a photographer turned Cinematographer thanks to the DSLR revolution. We were shooting on two Canon 5d mark ii with tripod, a RedRock Rig and a Konova slider. The lights were...wait there was no lights!!..Expect for a china ball, everything was shot by natural lights. Not even reflectors or bounce boards were used. Was this madness?! Perhaps. It was certainly the first time I've seen a DSLR film production with out some lighting gear. This makes me eager to see what the final results of the picture will look like as Barry will be editing the movie. Another thing I saw for the first time on a production was the iPad Slate. I mention about this app on a previous blog and was ecstatic to finally see it being used on a set.
For sound, Alex was recording on H4 Zoom which he has gotten used to after several pervious shoot using the DSLR. Met a lot of great people on the production and hope to work with these guys again.

OMG! it Been Like Forever

Hello, people who may or may not be reading this film makers dribble. Im back from a long time of writing nothing. I turn 26 yrs old this passed February and I've been keeping my self busy. Was close in geting a full time editing postion from one of Floridas best Production Studios but I didn't make the cut. Since that day I've been reading more books on the subject of video/ film editing. The books I grabbed and recommend to my readers are the following: How to cheat in Motion, Make the Cut and iMac portable genius.Really good books. Another thing is Im working on a side project that I was involved with about a year ago. I was working on a documentary about the life of the great boxing coach Angelo Dundee.. I've always like this story and I am glad to be back working on it. As for my DSLR progress, I currently get a new rig to mount my 550D/ T2i. I'll have video to show off the rig and share my thoughts about it.

New Typography ad for VP group

For the pass few days I've been trying to create a new video ad for my company. If you haven't seen my other animated ads I've got quite a few. This would be my fourth video, which I decide to take on a different approached with the pace and text animation. The style is called "Typography" which in Wikipedia is defined as "the art and technique of arranging type, type design, and modifying type glyphs" or something like that. Here is my Ad using this method.

If your for something like this to promote you company hit me up at www.vidproductiongroup.com
